Residency

Dancemakers believes that residencies offer creators an extremely valuable opportunity to explore lighting, sets, costumes and interpretation directly on stage with the creative team. This process can greatly influence the perception and evolution of a work in creation.

Each year, a chosen choreographer(s) is offered a residency of 3 - 4 weeks, depending on the project, in the Dancemakers studio-theatre, with access to all equipment as well as the company's production manager. As part of the residency, the choreographer / guest company will also lead community workshops and present informal showings of the work.

Dancemakers Centre for Creation was proud to launch its first ever residency program in the summer of 2004. The first two resident companies, Platform 33 with Kim Itoh, and Michael Trent's the empty collective, developed works which were presented by Danceworks in its 2004-05 season.

In the summer of 2005, we were delighted to welcome multidisciplinary artist Peter Chin and Tribal Crackling Wind to our third residency, in association with DanceWorks. For three weeks, Peter and his team of dancers and musicians collaborated in our space to create STUPA, a stunning work presented that following October. STUPA was recently honoured with the 2006 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography, Dance Division!

From July 9 -27,  2007, Dancemakers welcomed dance artist Gerry Trentham  to our sixth summer Residency at Dancemaker's Centre for Creation.

In May of 2008, we were excited to have Heidi Strauss in residency as our seventh summer Residency

Application and Eligibility

Choreographers interested in participating in this program are encouraged to send a proposal to Michael Trent, Dancemakers' Artistic Director. To be eligible, applications must involve the creation phase of a work that is intended for public presentation in its finished form.

Residency opportunities are open to the Canadian dance community and will also be offered to international choreographers in future years.
