How to Improvise
and how not to not improvise

A class in (mostly) sound improvisation for dancers (and their admirers).

Please note pre-registration is required.
Deadline for Registration is November 5

This will be a five-day workshop in group improvisation. The main emphasis will be on vocal sound improvisation, occasionally incorporating elements of theatre, movement, and games. While parts of the class will focus on specifics of sound improvisation (how to make sounds, how to listen to sounds) the main emphasis is on general principles of improvisation (how to give and take control, how to be surprised, how to make interesting decisions in groups, how not to mind other people so much, how to enjoy being put off-balance, etc…)

My central interest is in improvisation as a way to get people together to interact in ways that are unfamiliar, pleasurable, and interesting. The classes are usually a lot of fun, which is part of the point.
Most of the class will be spent making noises with other people. You don’t have to know about music, or be able to sing. An ability to enjoy listening to unfamiliar sounds is a plus but not necessary. It is expected that many of the attendees will be dancers, but no dance experience is required.

About the Instructor
Misha Glouberman’s Terrible Noises for Beautiful People Series has gotten groups of people doing vocal sound improvisation in a variety of contexts, including an all-night performance of over a thousand participants at Nuit Blanche, a participatory rendition of John Zorn’s Cobra, and a very large birthday party with noise and cake. Misha is the host and producer of the popular Trampoline Hall Lecture series, and the creator of the Room 101 Games series. He claims to be Canada’s foremost charades instructor, a claim which goes unchallenged. To learn more about Misha’s classes, visit the Misha Glouberman School of Learning at www.schooloflearning.org
